SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) – A 13-year-old girl has died after being struck by a Santa Ana Unified School District employee driving a work truck.
The Orange County Register reports police Cmdr. Jeffrey Smith says the teen had been riding a bicycle in the crosswalk Monday morning when the school district box truck struck her.
Orange County Fire Authority officials and Santa Ana police responded to the scene near Diamond Elementary and Carr Intermediate schools. It was unclear whether the girl attended school nearby.
Fire Capt. Steve Concialdi says police officers and paramedics performed CPR on the girl but were unable to resuscitate her. She died in the street from severe head and chest injuries.
Investigators don’t believe impairment or speed played a role in the collision.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
