HAYWARD (KRON) — Hayward police have released more information about the suspect accused of shooting and killing Sergeant Scott Lunger early Wednesday morning.

A 15-year-veteran of the Hayward police department, police said Lunger was killed during a routine traffic stop.

Police have identified the suspect as 21-year-old Mark Anthony Estrada of Oakland. Police said in a press conference Wednesday Estrada is associated with a gang, but has not been validated as a member.

Police said Estrada is not believed to have a criminal history.

The suspect is said to not be cooperating with police. He is being treated for a gunshot wounds at Highland Hospital, according to police. They are not considered life-threatening.

Estrada checked himself into San Leandro Hospital, where he was placed under arrest, police said.

Police also said they recovered ammo and a gun in a search warrant. Police said they are still getting search warrants to gather evidence.

Police also said Estrada’s father owns a company in Hayward. Estrada worked for his father, police said.
