SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a bill permitting the children of domestic workers to attend school in the districts where their parents work.
The bill was sparked after an affluent school district in Orinda hired a private investigator to look into a student’s residency, then expelled the second-grader. She was living in the district where her mother worked five days a week.
SB200 by Democratic Sen. Ricardo Lara of Bell Gardens received unanimous support in both the Senate and the Assembly. The Democratic governor announced signing it Tuesday.
Under the new law, students who live where their parents work three days a week will qualify to attend schools.
Brown also signed a companion bill, AB1101, requiring that schools have a set policy for investigating students’ residency before hiring private investigators.
