UPDATE: The victim has been identified as 71-year-old Hugo Pinell. He has been in prison since Feb. 17, 1965, serving a life-with-parole sentence for rape with force.
The prison said he killed a correctional officer on March 3, 1971 in Soledad. He was sentenced to life-with-parole on May 22, 1972.
He was involved in an attempt to escape from San Quentin State Prison on Aug. 21, 1971. Six people were left dead in the escape, including two correctional officers, three inmates, and the founder of the Black Guerrilla Family prison gang.
Pinell was convicted of assaulting two corrections officers during an escape attempt and sentneced to life-with-parole on Sept. 1, 1976.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – Corrections officials say one inmate is dead and five others have been taken to an outside hospital to be treated for stab wounds after a riot at a Northern California state prison.
Officials say the inmate died during an altercation that involved numerous inmates Wednesday at California State Prison, Sacramento.
The fight began shortly before 1 p.m. in an exercise yard. Correctional officers say they used pepper spray and fired at least two warning shots to stop the fight.
No employees were hurt.
The prison commonly called New Folsom houses more than 2,300 maximum-security inmates in Folsom, about 25 miles east of the state capital.
The identity of the victim is being withheld until relatives are notified.
Prisoners remained locked in their cells as officers investigate the disturbance.
