BRISBANE (KRON) – The husband of a missing 57-year-old Brisbane woman has died in an apparent suicide late Tuesday night hours before investigators raided the couple’s home on Wednesday morning, according to Fremont police.
Paul Titchener, 62, was not named as a suspect, but was a person of interest in his wife’s disappearance, police said.
At around 11 p.m. on Feb. 13, 57-year-old Shelly Titchener told her husband she was leaving the house to spend time with a friend, police said. Two days later, her husband reported her missing and at-risk.
Police said Titchener left her home without medication, cellphone, and she had limited access to money.
On Monday, Feb. 15, Titchener was spotted at Nordstrom in San Mateo and appeared to be shopping.
KRON’s Exclusive Interview With Paul
It was just Tuesday night before his apparent suicide when KRON’s Justine Waldman spoke exclusively with Paul about Shelly’s disappearance.
KRON did the interview in their backyard because he was hoping Shelly would see the interview–and seeing her yard would trigger her memory to come home, Paul said.
He thought she had suffered a stroke and was lost.
Paul told KRON he and his wife of 20-plus years had gotten into a disagreement that Saturday night, and she left upset saying she was going to stay with a friend.
“We’ve gone through her entire friend list, and even going back pretty deeply in the past, and it’s hard to see anyone in there that would have any cause to harm her,” Paul said.
No friends admitted Shelly was with them and Paul became concerned. He told KRON when she, who he said was very social and friendly, had not contacted anyone, including their two sons or her parents, that is when he became worried.

Body found near Dumbarton Bridge
On Sunday, Feb. 21, at 8:16 p.m., the Fremont Police Department responded to a call of human remains found by people fishing near the Dumbarton Pier.
Fremont police said the body, which was found in the marshlands located at the eastern foot of the Dumbarton Bridge, was being investigated as a suspicious death, according to Fremont police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques.
The legs, arms, and head of the body were not found and appear to have been severed from the torso, police announced on Tuesday afternoon.
At 8:47 p.m. Tuesday night, California Highway Patrol officers responded to a report of a man who jumped into the water from the Bay Bridge western span. The Caltrans tow truck driver reported seeing a male sitting on the railing, and then saw the man fall into the water.
A U.S. Coast Guard crew recovered the body of Paul Titchener about 45 minutes later, CHP officials said in a statement.
Suspicious Death Investigation
The identity of the female, as well as the cause and manner of death, have not been confirmed by the Alameda County Coroner’s Office.
“While we cannot confirm the body found is that of Shelly Titchener, we also cannot rule it out,” Fremont police said.
Fremont detectives are continuing to work with the Brisbane Police Department and the Alameda County Coroner’s Office on this case.
Anyone with information surrounding this case is asked to contact police 415-467-1212.
Search of Couple’s Home
Neighbors said they were shocked to hear the news about Paul’s suicide, and they were equally shocked to see that the family home was a crime scene.
Officers from the Fremont and Brisbane police departments were conducting an investigation at the family home.
A next door neighbor said Paul and Shelly were going through some rough times in their marriage.
“I think that they…didn’t have a great relationship, but a lot of people don’t have great relationships,” neighbor Dee Dee Porter said. “It’s disconcerting in that…it’s a small town and we’ve always really taken a lot of pride in it being a safe town, and it’s just unnerving to have something like this happen.”
Police detectives were still on scene as of 8:15 p.m. Wednesday night.
