HAYWARD (BCN) — Police are looking for a driver of an SUV involved in a fatal hit-and-run collision on Wednesday evening in Hayward.

The collision occurred at 7:22 p.m. at the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and City Center Drive, police said.

A 51-year-old transient Hayward man was walking east near the crosswalk when a dark-colored Jeep Grand Cherokee hit him, witnesses told police.

The man was taken to Eden Medical Center, where he died, police said.

The Jeep continued north and witnesses said it had front-end damage.

One witness told police the man was walking against the “don’t walk” signal and that northbound traffic had a green light. Another witness told police the Jeep had the green light and that the pedestrian appeared to inebriated and crossing rather slowly, Sgt. Jason Corsolini said.

An investigation showed the traffic signal was functioning properly.

The Alameda County coroner’s bureau has not released the name of the man because his next of kin have not been notified.

Anyone with information about the hit-and-run is being asked to call Sgt. Jason Corsolini of the Hayward Police Department’s traffic bureau at (510) 293-7149.
