HAYWARD (KRON) — A big rig crash is causing major delays on I-880 in Hayward Friday morning.
Two southbound lanes of I-880 are closed due to the overturned big rig. All northbound lanes have reopened.
The accident happened around 3 a.m. just after the A Street exit, according to California Highway Patrol.
A car collided with a big rig hauling crates of wine. The big rig overturned onto the center divider blocking most of southbound I-880. The driver of the car fled the scene on foot leaving their car behind, CHP said.
TRAFFIC:Bay Area Traffic Conditions
The big rig overturned and spilled about 5 gallons of diesel.
The carts of wine have to be unloaded one-by-one before the big rig can be uprighted and towed away.
Drivers are advised to avoid the area. KRON 4’s Robin Winston says to use city streets instead.
CHP estimates that the scene will be cleared around 9 a.m. or 10 a.m.
When the crash first happened, all lanes of southbound I-880 were closed causing a gridlock on the freeway.
The cause of the collision is under investigation. Police are asking any witnesses to give them a call.
