KNOXVILLE (WATE) – A Sweetwater man was arrested after a female was extorted through Snapchat.

Investigators believe Brandon Douglas Shanahan, 22, made a woman believe she was talking to University of Tennessee football player Cameron Sutton on the social media app. The suspect used the username “Camsutton2323” for communication with the victim. The number 23 is Sutton’s jersey number.

Court records say a UT Police Department detective, who is also an FBI task force officer and Special Deputy US Marshal, met with a victim on April 12 who said she was speaking with a Snapchat user with the username “Camsutton2323” for around three weeks. The victim said she had received messages calling her a goddess and saying she was beautiful, and that the conversation was mostly one-sided.

At some point, Shanahan sent the victim his phone number, after which the victim said she would “give him a chance” and reply to him more often. She said she told “Camsutton2323” her hometown and her roommate’s name. She said he then sent a photo of a black male torso with a large tattoo on the rib area.

The victim said she went to a bar and became “very drunk” on April 9 and took photos of herself, which she posted to her Snapchat. She said she remembers going home and going to bed after that. The victim said “Camsutton2323” told her the next day she had taken nude photos of herself and sent them to him while intoxicated. She said she couldn’t not recall for certain and since Snapchat deletes photos after a specified number of seconds, she had no way to verify or dispute the claim.

“Camsutton2323” told the victim he would post the alleged nude photos on social media unless she took more nude photos and sent them to her. She said she then began receiving phone calls from the Snapchat user from a blocked number. He claimed to be Cameron Sutton and tried to get the victim to say lewd things back to him. When she refused, he said he had been shot with a firearm in the past and that “I’m going to put you through what I went through,” which she said led her to believe he was going to shoot her.

The victim said the suspect kept asking for nude and sexually provocative pictures and text messages. She was able to provide screenshots of some of his requests as well as her terrified demands that he stop, but his threats increased. She said the threats were persistent and came in at odd and unusual hours.

She said, under duress, she finally complied with his demands and sent photos of herself wearing a bikini and undergarments. She said she would not have sent them if she were not being threatened.

Detectives were able to look at phone records and traced the phone calls to a TracFone owned by Brandon Shanahan. They were also able to use IP address data from Snapchat to connect Shanahan to the messages.

During the investigation, law enforcement realized that Sutton was a victim to criminal impersonation and never spoke to the victim. The report claims the football player did not know of the impersonation.

The report says “other things of value” were taken from the female victim by Shanahan.

Shanahan could face up to two years in prison if convicted. The suspect is out on bond.

Investigators believe Shanahan may have contacted several other female victims. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is asking anyone who may have been contacted by the username “Camsutton2323” to call 865-744-0751.
