HAYWARD (KRON)—The Alameda County Sheriff’s office is investigating a shooting in Hayward Wednesday afternoon.

Police said the suspect shot and killed a man stopped at an intersection in Cherryland. The suspect surrendered about a half-mile from the crime scene, police said.

The suspect will be charged with murder. The gun is still missing.

A second suspect, a female, who was the driver, was also arrested, according to deputies.

The incident happened at Hank’s Liquor Store on the corner of Blossom Way and Meekland Avenue just around 1 p.m., said Sgt. Ray Kelly of the Alameda County Sheriff’s office.

The victim was stopped in his red Dodge pickup truck on southbound Meekland Avenue while waiting to make a left turn onto Blossom Way when a gunman approached and shot him, sheriff’s Sgt. Ray Kelly said.

When authorities arrived at the scene, they found the victim with a gunshot wound. He was later pronounced dead at the scene, Kelly said.

The suspect fled on foot down nearby railroad tracks. Deputies responded and shut down the intersection, where the victim was pronounced dead.Sheriff’s deputies set up a perimeter and used dogs and a helicopter to search for the suspect. A person of interest has been detained related to the homicide, deputies tweeted.

The initial information they obtained about the suspect was limited, but investigators were reviewing surveillance footage to better find out what he looks like, Kelly said.

As of about 3:30 p.m., the sheriff’s office announced a person of interest had been detained in the case and later confirmed the person had been arrested as a suspect.

Streets were closed for several hours but have now been reopened.

Deputies searched the backyards of some residents.
