SANTA CLARA COUNTY (KRON) — Protesters including some sexual assault victims have gathered outside the Santa Clara Main Jail waiting for convicted rapist and former Stanford swimmer to be released from jail Friday morning.

Turner served three months of the six-month sentence he received for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman outside of a Stanford fraternity house.

The case gained nationwide attention as many people are outraged saying the sentence was too lenient. Now protesters are calling to remove Superior Court Judge Aaron Persky, who issued the punishment, from the bench.

There’s no scheduled time for when 21-year-old Turner will be released from custody, but protesters began gathering at the jail at 11:30 p.m. Thursday night.

“This is something that is really near and dear to my heart. It’s something that needs to change. We need to end rape culture. It’s ridiculous and it’s gone on too long,” a victim of sexual assault told KRON4’s Averi Harper.

When Harper asked the woman what she would say to Judge Persky, she said: “How? How could you do that? How? This is ridiculous and when he goes out and rapes someone else, it will be on your hands.”

Members of UltraViolet, a group that advocates for women’s rights and opposes sexism, began their protest outside of the jail.

They are carrying signs that read “Thanks to Judge Persky, Brock Turner served just 3 months for rape,” and ends with the #PerskyMustGo hashtag.

Rape victim advocates and supporters of the effort to recall Persky spoke out about their claims that the judge puts rapists and abusers above victims, according to UltraViolet.
