Van Ness project to cause major traffic delays

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A new construction project in San Francisco will make driving in the city even more challenging, and it is expected to go on for years.

There are barriers all over Van Ness Avenue preventing drivers from turning.

It is all part of a project that will turn the islands into a bus zone for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA).

Van Ness is a main street that commuters use to get into the Financial District and other places for work. Needless to say, the impact on traffic will be major.

To avoid taking this route, you can turn off on Broadway if heading south and Lombard if driving north.

Eventually with the buses taking the center island, they will also take up a lane. This means two lanes for drivers.

SFMTA officials say this will ultimately save drivers time, but for now, plan on considerable delays as this project unfolds for years to come.
