ANTIOCH (KRON) — One of two inmates who escaped from the Santa Clara County Jail has been caught.
Late on Tuesday night, authorities confirmed 26-year-old Laron Campbell was captured near Antioch.
Campbell was hiding in his sister’s attic, according to an official with the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Deputy. Campbell’s sister, 24-year-old Marcaysha Alexander, was also arrested. She was booked into jail for harboring a fugitive.
His accomplice, 33-year-old Rogelio Chavez, is still on the loose. There is a $20,000 reward being offered for information leading to the inmates’ capture.
Officials say the pair escaped from the jail last Wednesday by sawing through the bars on a window and rappelling to the ground.
Earlier on Tuesday, police conducted a series of raids in Santa Clara County and arrested one woman accused of driving Chavez around to avoid capture.
Campbell is being taken back to the Santa Clara County Jail.
A woman who helped Chavez after he escaped was arrested Monday on suspicion of being an accessory to a crime, Glennon said.
Emily Vaca, 35, of San Jose, helped Chavez evade authorities by driving him around the county. She was arrested Monday after authorities raided a motel in Gilroy, where Chavez was believed to be hiding, Glennon said.
Chavez and Campbell are facing possible life sentences if convicted of burglary, extortion, false imprisonment and other charges on which they were being held. Chavez had been held at the jail since August and Campbell since February 2015.
