SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Taking a stand against hate Friday, San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon visited a mosque.

KRON4’s Philippe Djegal reports that Gascon reassured members of the Islamic society of San Francisco that Islamophobia is unacceptable.

“Here in San Francisco, we will not tolerate hate,” Gascon said.

After spending an hour inside the mosque at the Islamic Society of San Francisco, Gascon observed the prayer service, addressed the crowd, and told the Muslim community directly that they have his office’s support.

He said he doesn’t care about their immigration status, and encouraged victims of hate to report crimes and not stay in the shadows.

It was a message well-received.

Gascon was joined by other religious leaders of different faiths in a show of unity.

The District Attorney notes that since last year, hate crimes are up.

“Seven percent nationwide against all groups and 67 percent against Muslim-Americans, and that is nationwide, that’s correct. We saw a small uptick in San Francisco as well, um, but it has been more generalized,” Gascon said.

Gascon says fallout from the presidential election has emboldened racists, and he vows to fight against that.

“We’re seeing people that before even if they harbor some level of hate or intolerance they kept it to themselves. Now they feel very comfortable articulating that, uh, very publicly and we want to make sure that we do not make people believe that that’s okay,” Gascon said.
