SUISUN CITY, Calif. (KRON) – Firefighters responded to a 4-alarm vegetation fire that broke out in Suisun City on Wednesday afternoon.
Around 3:26 p.m. the fire was reported near Elmwood and Maple where residents were being evacuated.
Suisun City fire officials say the blaze has grown to 300 acres and continues to grow.
Crews say the fire began as a vegetation fire within city limits and came in direct contact with multiple homes.
Officials say 11 homes have been damaged or lost.
Residents on the rest of Maple were evacuated. It is unknown at this time how many people were displaced.
Suisun City Wildlife Center, which holds local wildlife including owls, foxes and coyotes, was damaged but the main building was saved.
Crews were able to save some foxes and let them go, however, some owls were lost.
A total of 200 firefighters from multiple agencies are assisting in the fight, including Cal Fire, Vallejo Firefighters Association, Solano County Firefighters, Contra Costa County Firefighters, and Kings County Firefighters.
Suisun City police asked residents to avoid the area of Kellogg Street and the boat launch area.
Crystal Middle School located at 400 Whispering Bay Lane has been designated as the evacuation center.
Investigators are working to determine the cause but say the hot, windy weather has proven to be a problem for crews.
