SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KRON) – The National Weather Service issued a Wind Advisory across the Bay Area for the weekend.

The powerful winds caused chaos for most parts of the Bay Area on Sunday.

The advisory began Saturday night at 7 p.m. and will last until Monday morning at 11 a.m. However, the advisory may need to be extended until Tuesday as winds will pick up Monday night.

North Bay

Strong, gusty winds created chaos in Sonoma. A large oak tree crushed several cars Sunday morning and blocked part of Riverside Drive for hours.

“I turn around and see the tree coming down and I scream and run right away,” Juan Acebedo said.

Acebedo’s vans were destroyed but he was more concerned about his neighbors across the street. Miki Perez said he was inside with his daughter and wife when the same tree came crashing down.

“Oh it’s terrible,” “It’s big noise.”

The damages extended to Perez’ guest room where a huge hole was left behind. The bed covered with broken branches and twigs.

He’s thankful no one was hurt.

With help from the Red Cross, Perez and family will be spending the night at a hotel.

The sounds of buzzing chainsaws carried throughout the area as other trees were downed by the powerful winds. Power lines also had ot be pulled back up and the wind whipped around.

One man was even tasked with climbing onto a home and pulling out a tree limb that pierced a roof.

A long day of damage clean up, but people are happy to have escaped unharmed.

“Everybody is still OK and glad that it’s just materials.”

East Bay

It was also a very windy day in the East Bay.

“In all my years of living here, I have never seen a wind event this big,” Alex Reyes said.

Reyes took video from his backyard off Orangewood Drive in Fremont.

“Normally it wouldn’t go over because we have it on cinder blocks but despite the winds and cement, it still blew it over like a toy and I was really amazed by the damage,” he said.

Reyes said the high winds destroyed his canopy and shattered the glass in an outdoor table.

Over in Oakland, firefighters responded to similar scenes.

“Avoid Skyline Boulevard in Oakland. It’s not that there’s a particular danger on Skyline but there’s trees down, wires down in so many different places,” firefighters so it’s hard to get around and we’d like to avoid traffic which hampers our ability to respond.”

Oakland firefighters said the wind caused power outages and took out traffic signals at Park and MacArthur boulevards.

“We’re in the neighborhood already today of over 100 responses for trees down into power lines or trees down into houses, into streets, anywhere where they might is what were responding to.”

Viewers also shared their photos and videos with KRON4 News that showed broken fences in Brentwood and blocked roadways in Concord.

In San Leandro, Highway 880 experienced delays due to downed power lines over the roadway.

Emergency responders say it’s important to avoid areas like this and report the damages.

“We’re reminding people that if you come across a wire that’s down or a wire with a tree in it, please do not touch it or approach it,” . “Try and get a good location of where it is and call us and let us know 911 or 311 they can access and let us know about the hazard.”

Strong winds are expected to reach 20 to 35 miles per hour with gusts up to 50 miles per hour.

The North Bay Mountains could experience winds up to 60 miles per hour.

The NWS warns Bay Area residents of downed tree limbs and power lines, possible isolated power outages, and difficult driving conditions.
