SAN JOSE (KRON) – An AMBER Alert was issued Monday for a 2-year-old girl believed to be abducted by her father in the Bay Area.
Officials say 2-year-old Bethanie Carraza was last seen with her father, 24-year-old Victor Magana, on Sunday around 10 p.m. in San Jose.
Magana and the child were later found in San Luis Obispo County, according to San Jose Police.
The child was found safe and the father was taken into police custody.
According to San Jose police, Magana allegedly assaulted and stabbed the toddler’s mother at a home in the 500 block of S. 11th Street before fleeing with their daughter.
“Last night we got a call from a woman who was screaming. When our officers arrived they found her stabbed,” said San Jose Police Sgt. Enrique Garcia.
The mother was taken to a local hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.
“She was yelling ‘help, help, he’s going to kill me, he’s going to kill me,'” said neighbor Andrew Torres.
Torres and his roommates rushed outside to help the woman, whom Torres said had an extension cord wrapped around her neck.
Police issued a statewide Amber Alert that led them to the Old Cambria Market in San Luis Obispo County where the suspect stopped for gas and locked his keys inside.
Police offer no details about a possible motive for the assault and kidnapping but say they had nothing but praise for the store keeper and his customers who spotted the suspect and took action.
Magana was described as 5’4″, 140 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.
CHP originally said he should be considered armed and dangerous.
