Pleasanton (KRON) — Relief is coming to East Bay commuters on Interestate 580 with the new express lanes scheduled to open in both west and east bound directions.
On Tuesday, Alameda County Transportation Agency will be unveiling toll lanes that aims to relieve congestion that snarls the Pleasanton commute. The expansion was constructed following extensive research showing how the lanes will allow commuters to travel through the Tri-Valley area more smoothly and get to their destinations faster and easier.
These new express lanes will be called Open Access Lanes and extend along the 14-mile Tri-Valley corridor in Alameda County through Dublin, Pleasanton and Livermore.
The cost to use the express lanes will vary based on congestion levels and the distance traveled in the express lane, according to a spokesperson Alameda County Transportation Commission. An agency officials says that prices could reach up to a dollar per mile.
The lanes are scheduled to this month and are scheduled to operate Monday through Friday, 5am to 8pm. All other times the lanes are open to all users with no toll and no toll-tag requirements.
The I-580 Express Lanes are operated by the Alameda County Transportation Commission and are funded with federal, state, regional and local dollars, including voter-approved Measure B. They are part of the Bay Area Express Lanes, a multi-agency network that will include 550 miles of express lanes by 2035.
The westbound express lane begins at Greenville. There is open access to and from the lanes from Greenville to Hacienda and no entry/exit from the lane from Hacienda to the end just before San Ramon/Foothill, according to Alameda County Transportation Commission.
The eastbound express lanes begin at Hacienda. There is no entry/exit from the lanes between Hacienda and Fallon/El Charro, the agency says.
