EAST BAY (BCN) — One eastbound bore of the Caldecott Tunnel is re-open this morning after a collision between two vehicles, according to the California Highway Patrol. Once the fire was extinguished, traffic remained backed up in surrounding area.

CalTrans crews responded to the scene to inspect the tunnel for safety and to clean up the wreckage. The tunnel remained closed for several hours.

The collision was first reported at 6:43 a.m. and one vehicle was reported on fire in the tunnel’s bore number one, the eastbound lanes. People were evacuated from their cars inside the tunnel and were moved outside along the highway as they wait for buses.

The Caldecott Tunnel connects Oakland to Orinda on state Highway 24.
