SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Military veterans, their families and the community came together in San Francisco’s Presidio on Monday, for its annual Memorial Day celebration honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for America.

At Monday’s ceremony at the Presidio Officers’ Club, retired U.S. Army Major General Robert Ostenberg remembers when he was drafted in 1969.

Ostenberg was drafted to fight in the Vietnam War, many of the people he served with were undrafted.

They grey sky over the Officers’ Club served as a backdrop of a helicopter fly-over by the U.S. Coast Guard during the ceremony.

Among the speakers honoring those who died was San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, who thanked and offered remembrance for all of the people who served.

“Moving people off our streets and into supportive housing and services is among my highest priorities, especially when it comes to the brave men and women who have served our country and now find themselves

without a home,” Lee said in a statement on Friday.
