SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Commuters who use BART to cross the bay can expect to be inconvenienced for several says this summer.

Service through the Transbay Tube is going to be shutdown so that the transit agency can perform what it is calling critical track maintenance.

Officials with BART say that the section of track that requires the critical maintenance is between the West Oakland station and the Transbay Tube.

John Goodwin is with the Metropolitan Transportation Commission. He says that it;s expected that the disruption will happen during the first weekend in August and then again on Labor Day. Ridership is historically low during that time.

This won’t be the first big transportation disruption during Labor Day weekend. When the new span of the Bay Bridge was under construction, there were three full and one partial shutdown on the holiday weekend.

A representative from BART says that the magnitude of the repairs and upgraded need on this section of track is such that they can’t get it done during the normal overnight maintenance hours.

BART spokespeople say they aren’t ready to release the dates, or even say how many days they will need for the shutdown.

That information is expected to be released on Wednesday.
