SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — San Francsico Mayor Ed Lee is responding to the growing controversy of the city’s sanctuary ordinance and the role it played in the release of suspect Francisco Sanchez and the murder of Kate Steinle.

For the first time, we are hearing from the mayor in his own words. The mayor also addressed the criticism from officials such as Sen. Diane Feinstien about what’s happened in Steinle’s death.

“I begin by saying, could a simple phone call with the sheriff letting them know the release of someone in custody…would have prevented this?” Lee said.

At issue is the San Francisco’s sanctuary ordinance and a similar policy adopted by the sheriff’s department both of which lead to Sanchez’s release.
