SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi Thursday has responded to Mayor Ed Lee’s letter, which asked the sheriff to change the department’s policy on San Francisco’s sanctuary city policy.
In a letter Lee sent to sheriff Ross Mirkarimi Tuesday, the mayor said the city’s sanctuary city policy does allow notification.
On Thursday, Mirkarimi replied to Lee, saying the sheriff’s department and the mayor’s office needs to start an open dialogue on enforcement of the sanctuary city policy.
“This tragedy spotlights the need for legal clarity at every government level,” Mirkarimi said in a statement. “This matter requires an open and honest conversation about the legislative intent and meaning of San Francisco’s ordinances and how they comport with everyday enforcement of laws leading to deportations.”
The sheriff is asking for a Board of Supervisors committee hearing to give more clarity on the ICE contact policy.
