(BCN) – A high surf advisory is in effect for the San Francisco Bay and Monterey Bay area coasts though Monday afternoon, National Weather Service officials said.
The advisory is in effect until 5 p.m. for west-facing beaches on the coast from Sonoma County to Monterey County.
The largest waves are expected this evening and tonight. Breaking waves at the shoreline are expected to exceed 20 feet, weather service officials said.
Sneaker waves are also predicted, increasing the risk of a wave sweeping a beachgoer into the ocean. The potential for rip currents is higher.
Weather service officials said during the advisory period people should avoid turning their backs to the ocean and avoid fishing from rocks and jetties.
