AUSTIN (KXAN) – For the first time, we are hearing the 911 call made from the dentist office where investigators say a 14-month-old girl died after undergoing a procedure her parents said was routine.
Daisy Lynn Torres’ parents took her to Austin Children’s Dentistry in Northwest Austin March 29 to have two cavities filled. The dental office told Daisy’s mother there were more problems with her teeth than they anticipated.
The call confirms there was a dentist and anesthesiologist working on the child. The call also confirms the child was under general anesthesia when the medical situation occurred.
EMS: Are you with the patient now?
DR.: No I’m not, I’m watching him now. They’re performing chest compressions right now.
EMS: You said a 1-year-old. Is the child male or female?
DR.: Female.
EMS: Okay. I’m just confirming is she awake?
DR.: No.
EMS: Is she breathing?
DR.: I do not know. They’re administering some drugs via the IV right now. We were in the middle of surgery.
EMS: All right is there any further assistance I can give you?
DR.: You already dispatched EMS?
EMS: Oh yes. I got them going immediately.
DR.: How much longer till they’ll be here?
EMS: They should be there pretty quickly.
While the dental crew waited for EMS they attempted to perform CPR on Daisy. She was taken to the hospital where she died a few hours later after going to cardiac arrest. The Texas State Board of Dental Examiners is investigating her death.
Daisy was laid to rest April 7. Doves and butterflies were released to commemorate the 14-month-old girl. According to the family, Austin Children’s Dentistry offered to pay for the funeral expenses, but the Torres family declined.
