WINTERSET, Iowa (KWQC) – The sheriff of Madison County says an inmate recently caused thousands of dollars worth of damage to a jail cell.
Shawn E. Laird, 31, of Knoxville, Iowa, is accused of destroying a jail TV and phone, and then using a bed frame to shatter a window made of safety glass.
Sheriff Jason Barnes estimates the amount of total damage to be $3,000.
Laird was in jail on charges of possession of stolen property and aggravated assault on a peace officer when the destruction occurred on April 14.
“When asked what his problem was he said he was mad at his wife for lying to him,” Barnes tells KWQC.
“Not sure what she lied about, but that was his reasoning.”
