A man running for Fremont city council is dealing with more than just opposition from his opponents; he says he was a target of hate.

Like any other candidate running for political office, Justin Sha set up political posters throughout Fremont.

But when his dad drove by two of Sha’s banners on the corner of Mission Boulevard and Ondina Drive, he noticed something was wrong.

Both banners had been vandalized, and on one of the banners, a pair of horns and a Swastika were drawn on his forehead.

Now, Sha spoke to police who contacted people living in that area to see if perhaps they had surveillance video, but unfortunately, they neither had cameras set up outside of their homes nor did they see the incident take place.

Sha is a Chinese-American law school graduate, and although this incident does somewhat scare him and his family, he feels it’s important to shed light on the issue of hate.

“Think about how you would feel if someone were to draw something that was derogatory with your identity,” Sha said. “How would you feel if everyone in the world told you (that) you are a horrible person because of something you cannot control. And how would you feel if the entire world were to make fun of you for that.”

Now, Sha told KRON4 that he spoke to Fremont police about the incident, but he said police told him that they wouldn’t file it as a hate crime but rather as an act of vandalism.

KRON4 reached out to Fremont police for a statement, but they haven’t gotten back to us yet.
