Part of the Bay Bridge collapsed and houses were burning.
As night fell on Oct. 17, 1989, the Bay Area was reeling from the magnitude 6.9 earthquake. Massive power failures and strong aftershocks made for a terrifying night.
The quake struck just as the San Francisco Giants and Oakland A’s were squaring off for Game 3 of the World Series.
At 5:04 p.m., nature stepped up to bat.
