NOVATO (KRON) — A manhunt is underway for three suspects after a shooting in Novato killed a Novato high school student and injured another Wednesday night.

The double shooting prompted a shelter-in-place, according to Marin County sheriff’s officials. The shelter in place has since been lifted.

Novato High School will be closed on Thursday.

Deputies are on-scene, along with Novato police, with the two victims of the shooting on Fairway Drive. Around 5:30 p.m., deputies received a report from a victim who had been stabbed and shot near the end of Fairway Drive, off of Ignacio Boulevard.

The second shooting victim was found dead on the hillside in Open Space, police said. The first victim is recovering at the hospital but is in serious condition.

Novato police responded and found the victim, who was transported to a hospital.

They also determined the crime likely took place in an open space area on a nearby hillside, in the sheriff’s office’s jurisdiction.

“The Novato Police are actively investigating a shooting with multiple victims. Please stay inside, avoid the area of Fairway Drive near St. Andrews Drive. Shelter in place. We will post a follow-up message when we have more information,” according to Jamie Knox, who works with the City of Novato.

As of 5:55 p.m. deputies were working with a California Highway Patrol helicopter to rescue the victim, sheriff’s Lt. Doug Pittman said.

The suspects were described as three Hispanic males, based on information from the first victim, according to Pittman.

A source tells KRON4 Novato high school students were the victims of the double shooting. Police are at Novato high looking at surveillance video.

No arrests have been made. Police did detain someone that fit the suspect description but then released him.
