SANTA CLARA (BCN) — The San Jose Sharks are taking on the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Stanley Cup Finals starting Monday and one Santa Clara County supervisor is betting his local team will win it all.
Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors president Dave Cortese and Allegheny County executive Rich Fitzgerald in Pittsburgh have placed a
friendly wager on the hockey series.
Both counties are collecting donations for recreation programs at the Boys and Girls Clubs in their respective areas.
After the series ends — and no matter the victor — the clubs in San Jose and Pittsburgh will receive donations. But the donations will be
delivered by the bettors wearing the jersey of the winning team.
Cortese is betting he’ll be wearing teal instead of black and gold when he drops off donated sports equipment for the Boys and Girls Clubs of
Silicon Valley.
Anyone can contribute to the donations by bringing items to the County Government Center in San Jose starting Tuesday and continuing through
the series. Barrels on the first floor lobby, located at 70 W. Hedding St., will be set up.
The supervisor is collecting new or gently used equipment for flag football, soccer, basketball, wrestling, baseball and tennis.
The Sharks Foundation supplies hockey equipment, so other donations for young athletes are helpful.
The first Stanley Cup championship series game is Monday in Pittsburgh. Games 3 and 4 will be played in San Jose next Saturday and Monday.
