OAKLAND (KRON) — A driver has been taken into custody after leading officers on a low-speed car chase through Oakland Wednesday morning.

The chase started in Menlo Park when officers tried to pull over a suspected drunk driver at around 2:24 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol officials.

Authorities were able to arrest 28-year-old Abdul Henan Zahid of Berkeley at about 5:15 a.m. on Bay Forest Drive at Tunnel Road.

Zahid did not stop when police tried to pull him over. He made his way over the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge and onto northbound Interstate Highway 880.

CHP officers and police successfully deployed a spike strip to flatten some of the tires on the Toyota, but Zahid continued driving north on Interstate Highway 880 with three flat tires, CHP officials said.

The driver exited the highway and drove around the city before getting on westbound I-980 then back over to southbound I-880.

The black Toyota Avalon finally came to a stop in the Oakland hills where Tunnel Road becomes Skyline Boulevard near the Caldecott Tunnel, according to the CHP.

The vehicle then began to catch fire but Zahid refused to get out.

Officers then used a bean bag shotgun to break open a window, but the suspect still did not exit. A police K-9 then was used to apprehend Zahid and get him out of the car, CHP officials said.

Zahid was arrested on suspicion of offenses including driving under the influence and evading police, according to the CHP.Stay with KRON4 News for updates
