SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – A hiker has died after falling 1,000 feet on Mount Shasta in Northern California but his son has been rescued.

The California National Guard says its helicopter retrieved a severely injured man from the mountain at around 12:30 p.m. Thursday but he died at a hospital.

His name hasn’t been released.

The helicopter then returned and rescued the man’s son, who had a cellphone and was in good condition.

Authorities say the two were hiking near the summit of the 14,000-foot peak in Siskiyou County.

Last month, a 75-year-old man from Auburn died after he fell at the 10,000-foot level.
