SANTA CLARA COUNTY (KRON) — As former Stanford swimmer and convicted rapist Brock Turner gets ready for his early release, Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith spoke in support of a bill that will require jail time for convicted sex offenders.

Sheriff Smith wrote a letter to Governor Jerry Brown urging him to sign AB 2888.

“I think anyone convicted of rape ought to do time in state prison,” Sheriff Smith said. “That’s why I am supporting the Assembly Bill 2888. It’s on the governor’s desk right now. It makes mandatory prison sentence for anyone convicted of raping an intoxicated and unconscious person.”

The letter she wrote says that probation is not s fair sentence for anyone convicted of a sexual assault felony.

Sheriff Smith says she supports the bill as a Sheriff and as a mother.

When asked about death threats made against Turner, Smith said, “I think that we’re well prepared for him walking out today, and I don’t think there’s any definable, actionable threats, but there is a lot of hate.”

Smith confirmed that Turner would exit the jail through the front door but said she had not seen him this morning. She said she does not know whether Turner plans to stay in the Bay Area after his release, or about his conduct while in jail.
