CONCORD (KRON)—An 8-year-old Concord boy is recovering after being bitten by a baby rattlesnake on Wednesday.

Two boys were playing in the backyard of a home on Discovery Way when one of them was bitten around 5 p.m.

Firefighters responded to the incident and killed the rattlesnake.

The boy is in fair condition at John Muir hospital.

Firefighters say the recent hot weather has brought the snakes out from their dens.

KRON4’s Terisa Estacio talked to Jennifer O’Neal, who lives at the home where the incident occurred.

O’Neal said the boy was playing with her son when he had been bit by the rattlesnake.

The O’Neal’s backyard backs into open space in Concord.

“He was a trooper,” O’Neal said. “He was literally a little bit off the pavement in my backyard, so it wasn’t even in the middle of the brush, and my son came right in and told me, got on the phone before the boy got into the house and called 911. My kids were right there with him laying down telling him what he should do.”

Roberto Deleon who lives across the street from the O’Neal’s says he has killed seven rattlesnakes in his yard.

Deleon showed KRON4 the stick he uses to kill snakes.
