Handguns apparently have a grip on Americans.
While the number of Americans who owned guns has dropped over the past 40 years, those who do are more likely to own handguns over rifles or shotguns.
That’s according to a study published today in the journal Pediatrics.
The study was led by a family sociologist from New Zealand.
According to the report, as handgun ownership increased, so has the number of children who were killed from firearm injuries.
The study suggests one possible reason for this — since handguns are often purchased for personal protection, they are more likely to be stored loaded and unlocked in a more accessible place.
Researchers from Urban Health say nearly 5 million children are in homes where at least one firearm is loaded and not locked away.
