SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — It’s Day 4 of jury deliberations and still no verdict in the Kate Steinle murder trial.

The only action in the hallway outside Courtroom 13 is the prosecutor and the defense team walking back and forth from the courtroom and when the jury goes to lunch. The jury has been hashing out this case inside the hall of justice for close to 20 hours so far.

There’s been weeks of testimony. There’s a lot for the jury to go over.

The prosecutor says Jose Garcia-Zarate was conducting a secret game of Russian Roulette. The defense calls the shooting death of Kate Steinle a tragic accident.

The sticking points could be issues that the jury heard conflicting testimony from expert witnesses. That would include the gun, which was stolen from inside the parked car of a federal park ranger.

One side says that the model SIG Sauer is reliable and used by some law enforcement as a backup weapon.

The other side says it’s got the trigger pull of a child’s water pistol when it’s in what’s called single action mode.

KRON4 talked with a defense attorney not working on this case who says a longer deliberation could mean the jury is having trouble coming to a unanimous decision.

“A longer deliberation might mean the jury is having a hard time agreeing on what the evidence means and what the evidence is,” attorney Brian Ford said. “When that happens, they might not come to a unanimous verdict. The longer it goes, the more likely that will be an eventuality.”

He says if that’s the case here, it’s likely the judge will send them back to the jury room multiple times if they come back and say they are at an impasse before declaring the trial deadlocked.WHAT OTHERS ARE CLICKING ON:
