PETALUMA (KRON) — There is a daily traffic jam in the North Bay but this one is not on the freeway.

It’s around the Central Sonoma County landfill where dump trucks come and go all day, bringing in ash and debris from the North Bay fire clean up.

Aggravated truckers say they are waiting in line for hours.

A mile away from the Central Sonoma County Landfill off Mecham Road in Petaluma, trucks were lined up waiting to get in.

The landfill had around 100 trucks a day come in before the fire. Now, they are getting over 500 a day.

From open to close, these trucks are bringing ash and fire debris from the North Bay fire clean up, some days bringing as much as 5,000 tons of fire waste.

Each of the over 5,000 homes in Sonoma County that burned down contains an estimated 200 tons of ash and debris.

This daily backup has made it hard for regular locals who want to dump items. They are getting stuck in the same line that the big dump trucks are in.

The landfill run by Republic Services told KRON4 they doubled their staff and extended their hours, and they are moving these trucks in and out as fast as possible.

The landfill management told KRON4 part of the problem is FEMA requires that tedious paperwork is filled out for each truck carrying fire waste as it comes in and leaves.

The landfill and the truckers are asking for everyone’s patience because this cleanup effort will take months. This is just the beginning.

The North Bay fires have created the biggest fire debris clean up in California history.WHAT OTHERS ARE CLICKING ON:
