SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A celebration of life was held in honor of San Francisco’s late mayor Ed Lee Sunday afternoon at City Hall.

The public was invited to attend, and hundreds came out to bid their final farewell.  The late mayor was remembered as a loving father, husband, and leader.

KRON4’s Spencer Blake attended the service and says there was still a feeling a shock in the room, coupled with sadness by the sudden passing of Mayor Ed Lee.

Spencer says some of the speakers brought a lightened mood to the room.

The ceremony started at 3:00 p.m. and ran until around 5:00 p.m.

The memorial service had an all-star line up of speakers and guests who knew and loved Ed Lee.

Lee’s daughters, Acting Mayor London Breed, and other politicians, including former Mayor Willie Brown all spoke at the service.

The San Francisco Symphony and the GLIDE Church ensemble performed.Former Mayor Will Brown also paid his respects to Lee on Friday,He paused inside the Rotunda for about a minute, and eventually tips his hat and gives a salute to the mayor. KRON4 spoke with mayor Willie Brown before he went inside City Hall. “Ed Lee did not acquire the job by any means through his own initiation,” Brown said. “He didn’t say ‘I’m qualified.’ He didn’t say ‘vote for me.’ He didn’t say ‘I will entertain you.’ He did none of the above. He was purely a person who did the jobs that he was assigned and he never sought any of those jobs including the mayor-ship,” he said.

Lee died suddenly last Tuesday after collapsing while he was out grocery shopping. He was rushed to hospital, but doctors were unable to save his life.
