At least two Bay Area grocery store chains have removed romaine lettuce grown in Yuma, Arizona after E. coli concerns.

Both Trader Joe’s and Safeway tell KRON4 they have pulled the lettuce from their shelves.

One death had been reported in a national food poisoning outbreak linked to romaine lettuce.

Federal health officials say California reported the death, but they did not provide other details.

The government now has reports of 121 people who got sick in 25 states. At least 52 people have been hospitalized, including 14 with kidney failure, which is an unusually high number of hospitalizations.

Here is the full statement from Safeway:

Food safety is very important to Safeway. That’s why, in response to the CDC warnings, all of our stores removed chopped and whole-leaf romaine lettuce grown in the Yuma, Arizona region and we changed our source of supply.  Romaine lettuce currently in our stores, including romaine used in deli items, is not from the Yuma region but, rather comes from other growing regions.

Here is the full statement from Trader Joe’s.

“On April 13, 2018, upon learning of the concerns related to romaine lettuce and the CDC’s guidance for grocers, Trader Joe’s pulled from sale any products that might have had romaine grown in Yuma, AZ. Customers can be assured that all romaine-containing products sold in our stores, since April 14, 2018, have/are being made with only California-grown romaine. Customers concerned with any Trader Joe’s romaine-containing product may return it for a full refund.”
