The Union City Police Department is kicking off its “Click it or Ticket” campaign on Monday, May 21.

During the national seat belt campaign, which runs through June 3, you can expect to see additional officers on special traffic patrols aimed at stopping and ticketing drivers and passengers not wearing seatbelts.

Officials say this also includes drivers who fail to secure children in the proper child restraint seats.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly half — 48 percent — of the passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in 2016 were unrestrained.

That number rose to 56 percent from the hours of 6 p.m. to 5:59 a.m.

“This Memorial Day period and, in fact, every day, we want everyone in every vehicle to remember that buckling up could be their greatest defense in a crash,” said Rhonda Craft, Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety. “Putting on a seatbelt is one of the quickest, simplest and most effective ways to ensure you and your loved ones remain safe and sound on the road.”

In 2016, 40 Alameda County residents died unrestrained as either driver or passenger.

Statewide, 426 people were found to be unrestrained at the time of the crash. Officials say it’s estimated that 74 would have survived if they had a seatbelt on.
