When an Air Force captain vanished into thin air 35 years ago, there was speculation he defected or was kidnapped by the Russians for the secrets he held.
It turns out, he was just tired of it all, and came to California and took on a new name.
Tim is the man neighbors say lived in the Daly City home.
But it turns out, Tim is actually William Howard Hughes Jr. — an Air Force captain who disappeared in New Mexico 35 years ago while working on classified planning and analysis of NATO surveillance systems during the Cold War.
He was declared a deserter in December of 1983, but he was actually hiding in plain site in California.
Last Wednesday, Hughes was captured during a passport fraud investigation.
After claiming to be Barry O Berine, he was confronted about inconsistencies about his identity and admitted to being Hughes.
Hughes told authorities he was depressed about being in the Air Force and decided to leave, creating a false identity.
Hughes has been charged with desertion and is being held at Travis Air Force Base.
He faces up to five years of confinement, forfeiture of all pay and a dishonorable discharge.
