If passed, it could be the most strict in the country. The assemblyman behind the bill says it is all in an effort to improve children’s health.
The bill, if passed, would crack down on restaurants, preventing them from advertising sugary drinks with kids meals.
Only water and milk or a milk substitute would be allowed on the menu. Those sugary drinks would still be offered, but only upon request.
It is all in an effort to combat obesity and diabetes.
Research shows kids get a lot of unwanted sugar that gives them extra unhealthy calories that puts them at risk for a lifetime of problems including cardiovascular issues and tooth decay.
Some restaurants, like McDonald’s, already only offer milk and water in their kids happy meals.
The move in Sacramento brought mixed reactions.
However, nutritionists say it is a step in the right direction for children.
