In the last two years, the City of Berkeley has seen a significant rise in violent crime cases.

Recently, there has been an uptick of armed robbery cases as well.

On Monday the city’s mayor addressed that issue his State of the City speech.

Mayor Jesse Arreguin believes the key is adding more officers to the streets of Berkeley.

In recent weeks, we’ve seen numerous armed robberies including this one last month that involved a laptop being stolen.

The victim then confronted the suspect whose friend came up to help and the two got away after a punch was thrown.

We’ve seen a robbery case near People’s Park, also an Irish exchange student was robbed, and several cell phone robberies.

Mayor Arreguin says the department continues to lose officers to other departments.

In some cases, this is due to salary, and some who want to be part of special units that are no longer here because of the lack of officers.

The mayor says more officers is key, and while some of these rates have increased, the crime rate is still well below where it was ten years ago.
