Authorities in San Mateo say an 80-pound female mountain lion reported in the area earlier Monday has been safely detained and tranquilized.
The Department of Fish and Wildlife is partnering with UC Santa Cruz Puma Project to relocate the animal, according to the San Mateo Police Department.
Police say the mountain lion was reportedly seen walking into the backyard of a home in the area of Virginia Avenue and Jackson Street in the Aragon-Baywood neighborhood just after 9:30 a.m.
Police said earlier Monday that the mountain lion was not acting aggressively.
Authorities patiently tracked the mountain lion’s moves to keep her calm and she was eventually located at the 300 block of Jackson Street near Fairfax Avenue.
Roads in the area that were previously closed have re-opened and an earlier request for people in the area to stay indoors has since been lifted.
Police say they get quite a bit of sightings because their natural habitat is in the hills by Belmont.
The last time San Mateo PD successfully sedated a mountain lion was three years ago in Central Park.
