LAS VEGAS, NV (WCMH/AP) — One suspect was killed and a second wounded during a shootout Wednesday with police in downtown Las Vegas, hours after the pair was involved in the fatal shooting of another man, authorities said.
The gunfire began at around 7:30am when an unidentified man was fatally shot at a car wash.
About two hours later, police said they saw a vehicle matching the description of the one the suspects were driving, Las Vegas police Capt. Yasenia Yatomi said.
During the pursuit, both suspects fired numerous rounds out of their vehicles at officers. They even drove into on coming traffic during their efforts to get away.
Officer William Umana, a 17 year veteran of the force, fired his weapon inside his vehicle to shoot back at suspects, Metro Police told NBC4 sister station KLAS. A second officer, identified as Officer Paul Solomon, also fired shots during the chase.
The chase ended when the suspect’s SUV crashed into a wall at an elementary school, Yatomi said. One suspect then was fatally shot by police after he tried to flee on foot. The other, who was wounded by police, had made it onto the school grounds before he was taken into custody, Yatomi said.
No other injuries were reported.
The high-speed chase shut down traffic in an area covering several blocks of downtown Las Vegas.
The school was placed on lockdown while children inside were attending a summer program.
KLAS says the suspects were later identified by police as Fidel Miranda, 22, and Rene Nunez, 30. Miranda was shot multiple times and died at the hospital. Nunez has been booked into the Clark County Detention Center.
Both suspects have an extensive criminal past, Metro said.
Some of the charges Nunez now faces include:
