BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A Kern County Fire Department helicopter crew was needed to pull a man trapped on a rock in the fierce Kern River waters Monday evening.
Rescuers needed a helicopter to get the man out of the river and bring him to safety.
The rescue was seen live during KGET News at 5.
Rescue crews were called out to the location about a mile east of the mouth of the canyon for a man who fell into the river.
KCSO officials said a man and his wife were swimming in the river, but the man got too far out into the current and was swept away. The man eventually managed to pull himself up onto the rock.
Officials also used the rescue as a time to remind people to avoid getting into the water of the Kern River. Despite it appearing to be calm, the currents are fast and people can be swept away.
Officials urge using a guided tour company to explore the river, to wear a life vest and to not consume alcohol before getting into the water.
