In today’s edition of Rob Black’s Winners and Losers, our financial expert Rob Black and KRON4’s James Fletcher talk about Trump’s tariffs, Google, and Netflix.
Rob also answers the viewer question, “Which has more upside Bitcoin or Mega Millions?”
Here are today’s Winners and Losers:
Loser: Trump turns up the heat on trade: ‘Tariffs are the greatest!’ . . . President Donald Trump turns up the rhetoric on trade, insisting in a Tuesday morning tweet that “Tariffs are the greatest!” The statement comes amid an accelerating trade war between the U.S. and China. The tweet comes as Trump has levied tariffs on $34 billion worth of Chinese imports and has targeted $16 billion more than will come on line soon.
Winner: Alphabet (Google) surges to all-time high as Wall Street says internet giant’s big bets are ‘paying off’ . . . Wall Street analysts are growing more confident over the prospects for many of Alphabet’s emerging businesses, including YouTube, autonomous cars and cloud computing. Investments in machine learning & AI are driving innovation throughout Alphabet’s businesses, including mobile search, cloud, Google Home, Assistant, Waymo, etc.”
Loser: Your Netflix habit costs more than you think . . . Consumers underestimate what they spend on subscription services, like Netflix, Spotify and Amazon Prime,. On average, people spend twice as much as they think they do. Reeling in those recurring monthly expenditures is also a great way to save money. On average, consumers spend more than twice as much as they think they do: They estimated they cough up $111 a month on such services when they actually average $237. And regardless of the price tag, consumers were “happily hooked” on many of their subscriptions, particularly Amazon Prime (which recently raised the price to $119 a year), cable TV and music streaming services, such as Spotify.
