There’s a new problem in the ongoing effort to develop housing at the former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard in San Francisco.
Workers for the California Department of Public Health found a small, but highly radioactive object this week. The object was used by the military and is a “radium deck marker.” It is only about the size of a silver dollar.
It was found near newly built condos in an area that’s supposedly clean.
In fact, state and federal officials have claimed the area was never contaminated by radiation to begin with.
The radioactive object was unearthed in a housing area of Hunters Point known as Parcel A.
It’s being scanned for radioactivity after recent revelations that a clean-up contractor faked radiation measurements in other areas.
Three-hundred housing units have been completed in Parcel A and more are being built.
This is a huge project. It’s an effort to turn a super fund waste site into a waterfront community.
Developers have long assured residents they have nothing to worry about.
Government agencies are downplaying this latest discovery, arguing that nothing else has turned up and there’s no danger.
But residents and activists disagree, saying this raises lots of new questions and concerns.
