MILWAUKEE, WI (WCMH) — Wildlife officials in Wisconsin had to untangle five baby gray squirrels after their tails became tied together.

In a viral photo posted to Facebook, the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center at Wisconsin Humane Society says the five juvenile squirrel siblings had their tails hopelessly entangled with grass and plastic their mother had used to build a nest.

Officials say without intervention, the five furry creatures probably would have died.

“We anesthetized the distressed group and got to work delicately snipping away the grasses and plastic, finally freeing all five tails, then treating the various degrees of tissue damage,” wildlife officials wrote on the post.

All five squirrels are now doing well, and are expected to make a full recovery before they are released back into the wild.
