The Bay Area housing crisis has one city calling out another city.
The mayor of Oakland is accusing Cupertino of approving a lot of office space but not enough housing.
And the mayor of Cupertino is responding.
Mayor Schaaf says Cupertino’s actions are affecting her city.
KRON4’s Dan Kerman has reaction from both mayors.
In a series of tweets, Schaaf is calling out Cupertino for not doing its part in creating housing. Citing the new Apple headquarters, Schaaf tweeted last year the new Apple headquarter opened in Cupertino with space for 12,000 employees.
Meanwhile, the Cupertino issued permits to build just 27 homes in 2017.
On Wednesday night, the Cupertino City Council did approve the construction of nearly 3,000 homes in the old Vallco Mall, and for its part, Cupertino believed at least prior to approving the Apple campus that their housing was in line with where it should be.
But Schaaf isn’t buying it, saying had there not been state legislation opposition from neighborhood residents, it could have won the day in Cupertino.

The lack of housing production in the Bay Area, particularly in areas of high job growth, contributes to the region’s housing crisis and puts additional pressure on places like #Oakland.— Libby Schaaf (@LibbySchaaf) September 20, 2018
Cupertino Councilman Barry Chang said he heard from senior Apple managers at a recent company event that they were concerned about traffic and housing prices, and that Apple employees commuting from Oakland faced 90-minute commutes.— Libby Schaaf (@LibbySchaaf) September 20, 2018
Oakland issued a record number of housing permits last year – 4,343 – but can’t solve the regional housing crisis on its own. It’s important for all jurisdictions in the region to do their part.— Libby Schaaf (@LibbySchaaf) September 20, 2018
