U.S. Congresswoman Jackie Speier joined San Mateo police chiefs on Thursday to unveil a new text 911 system going live in the county.
Officials said they need to embrace technology, and they are trying to get ahead of the curve.
They want to offer every way possible for people to reach out for help during an emergency.
“We are launching this program to make sure that everyone can get ahold of us,” Speier (D-Hillsborough) said.
Speier, surrounded by police chiefs from all over San Mateo County, gathered to announce that from now on if you’re in San Mateo County, you can text for help.
“Our intent is to text,” Speier said. “It’s what we do first ”
Several of the police chiefs, including San Bruno’s Ed Barberini, pointed out it’s still better to call if you can.
“Always better to call,” Barberini said. “Only text if have to.”
If you are living in or visiting San Mateo County, you can text 911 for help.
The dispatchers will not know your location by GPS, so it’s important to include your location in the text.
